April 2010 Blocks

Carrolee wasn't able to do our first week of the month get together so April 20 was the substitute day. It was a lovely sunny day so we had lunch in the Howell Secret Garden where the spring bulbs and fruit trees were in bloom. Because so many of the group are on "special" diets she served us a nice bug salad with grilled chicken on top. Very nice.
Catching up with the blocks for April she showed the blocks and gave us hints on a few of the blocks.
p 241-A Better Correspondent pp as printed
247-Long Promised Photograph pp as printed
249-Sweet and Gentle Disposition we have an extra piece which is the reversed flag for PP
251-Numerous Excuses You can use the alternate drafted pattern which eliminates several seams
255-Another Prison we have the option of using the printed "triangles on a roll" or pp as shown
257-Brighter Future pp the center and then you can cut squares and rectangles to finish if you desire or just pp the whole thing

A Trip to England for a Quilt Show

I was given a link to a wonderful show that is currently running at the Victoria and Albert Museum of quilts. What an exciting thing it must be to visit this quilt show!

March 2010 Get Together

Since it's now March surely that means that spring is on it's way!
We enjoyed lunch at Mariann's home and a showing of the blocks from Feb. Mariann gave us a preview of the March 6 that will be due April 6 when we get together at Carrolee's home.
I will add a picture of March blocks when I get one as you know I forgot to take any last week! LOL

Here is Marrianne's choices for April.
A couple of hints shared were in some of the blocks you can piece them conventionally rather than foundation piece or pp part and then finish with "normal" patchwork. She also showed us that the flag needs to be reversed as printed!

April LL Group Meeting

With a much needed beautiful spring day three of our group managed to get together for lunch and to show off our latest "finishes" and of course to preview April's blocks.
Marrianne was the hostess this month and with Peggy gone back East and missing Christina we were small but still held a regular meeting.

Lunch was a yummy pita bread with a warm turkey filling...you will have to share the recipe with us...and we had an enjoyable chat as we ate. Previous to lunch we made block choices to try and finish up the year 2009, so be thinking Peggy and Christina. We also discussed if we would just skip the blocks in Dec so that the hostess in Jan doesn't feel overwhelmed during the Christmas holiday period. We decided to talk to Peggy since she is our Jan hostess.

Cathie explained how she varied from the pattern for the lower right block by strip piecing and ignoring the paper foundation. She said that for her it went together much quicker than expected and although she made the little rectangles squares the block doesn't look much different than the original.

The quilts were made the size of a cot rather than bed.

It was Peggy's turn once more to hostess the refreshments and March's choice of blocks. Lucky us we had a warm and sunny day with light breezes and about 50 degrees. Made us all long for spring!
Peggy fed us well too!
Of course we enjoyed showing each other our versions of Feb. blocks and some of us had some surprising fabrics and sometimes we would have traded our blocks for someone else's! LOL

This set of blocks are Peggy's, don't you love those stripes in the middle bottom block.

Maryann's blocks...love that daisy like print on the bottom left block.

These are Cathie's blocks and she took a risk with the pink and turquoise block, and the purple and yellow blocks with some different fabric choices!
Thanks for the hints Christina and now to March's blocks in the next post.

Feb. Get Together at Christina's

Our lunch time meeting was at Christina's home for Feb. and we were blessed with warmer weather and of course Christina fixed us a lovely lunch. Excellent Chicken Salad Sandwiches, strawberries and grapes and a Feb. favorite of Red Velvet Cake from a recipe by Paula Dean. We all remembered having the cake as youngsters and how much of a novelty it was with the two bottle of red food coloring ! LOL
We also shared our finished Jan blocks and each of us found something that we would do differently and more than one of us had to "re-make" a block that didn't work the first time.
We love seeing how choice of fabrics and colors makes such a difference in the look of the block.
Well done everyone and we are more than 1/4 through the quilt blocks.

January Meeting at Cathie's

Cathie took the excuse to leave up her Christmas decorations extra long so that we could enjoy them at our Jan. get together at her home. Unfortunately a terrible snowstorm had us postponing our first meeting of Jan but a week late isn't so bad.
Lunch was crust less quiche since Cathie is back on the low carb train once again along with homemade (by her neighbor) Toffee and a Mrs. Prindables caramel and triple chocolate chip apples.

We had a lovely time at Carrolee's home showing off our Nov. blocks and seeing what Carrolee's choice of blocks for December will look like. She also served soup and our choice of pie...and what choices we had from her family's pie baking marathon!

Peggy shared the story from Home Sweet Home as Richard Adams came home as a prisoner of war and told us about her father who also had been a prisoner of war during WWII.

October's meeting at Peggy's

WE had a wonderful October meeting at Peggy's and missed Christina but I am sure she is have a good time in Florida!
Peggy served us a lovely light lunch of homegrown salad, finger sandwiches and some cantaloupe shared with us from Arlene of the New Friend's Day group! YUM!
First of all we did our next group of 6 blocks instructions with Peggy. You can tell Peggy loves stars with her block choices!
She also gave us a transfer for our first Abe Lincoln block and a cd with more images for us to choose from if we wish. Cathie mentioned wanting to find an image of Jefferson Davis who was president of the Confederacy if possible to add to her quilt and she is planning on sharing that when she does.
We next did a show and tell of our completed blocks and it is so fun to see how fabric choices sometimes makes our blocks so different from each other once again.

Today was our second group meeting and we enjoyed a yummy treat at Christina's home and shared our hard work with the first 6 blocks!
It is so much fun to see how each person is interpreting the blocks and as we oohed and ahhed over the fabric choices! LOL
